This event aims at focusing on specific issues originating in the Doctorate in English for Special Purposes founded by Professor Edvige Schulte in 1984 in the Department of Political Science. At a time when English language teaching in Italian schools and Universities was still dominated by literary criticism and grammatical prescriptivism, this Doctorate reversed the mainstream trend and emphasised the key role of the communicative context and the importance of specialised lexis and genre conventions in researching and teaching English in academic and professional domains (politics, law, economics, statistics, demographics, etc). Many scholars have contributed to the development of this Doctorate and to researching specialised Englishes, notably Rosa Maria Bollettieri Bosinelli, Gabriella Di Martino, and many others.

This event addresses in particular university students, professionals and experts, doctoral students and researchers keen to explore the endless interplay between language and society, culture and ideology, English as a national and a world language.
