Abstract:

Navigating Multiple Identities and Roles Immigrant Women in Icelandic Higher Education

Dr. Cynthia Trialili. University of Island

The present study employs the analytical framework of intersectionality to analyse life story interviews with immigrant women in Iceland. The analysis examines the influential roles of intersecting differences, including gender, race, class, language, religion and immigration status, in shaping immigrant women’s identities, roles and their pursuit of higher education. The findings suggest that immigrant women perceive their educational pursuits as valuable currency in the host society and their ethnic communities, serving as a means to assert their agency against the dynamics of structural and interpersonal power relations manifested in forms such as sexism, racism, and classism. Education is also regarded as a transformative tool that empowers women and provides a path to a better future for themselves and their children. It is crucial to shed light on the intersectional identities and experiences of immigrant women in Iceland in order to understand this diverse population and to challenge the prevailing stereotypes and prejudices against immigrant women. It is vital to foster a supportive and equitable environment that encourages and facilitates immigrant women’s active participation in Icelandic society
